PhD. Viva
Viva voce is a Latin phrase meaning ‘living voice’, but academically it literally means a defense in presenting an academic thesis. Viva might not be as hard as writing the thesis to some post-grad students, but for me it is the most terrifying part in the process of completing my PhD. program. Just the thought of me having to sit in front of 6 panels and defend the work that caused me a good 3 years of my life was very disturbing. No matter how confident I was in the work that I have carried out, the fact that those people are the expert in the subject was very intimidating. Thank God, I have passed the day I’ve dreaded the most.
For those who are waiting for the viva, don’t hesitate to talk to your seniors who have passed their viva. Even though they might not be able to discuss on the questions, their experience on how they faced the examiners might be useful in preparing yourselves for the day. On top of that look for tips from books and internet such as below. And most importantly, discuss with the supervisors on the subject’s recent issues.
